Summary

The project approaches several synthesis strategies of new ionic polymers (PEs), both soluble and crosslinked (hydrogels), based on polysaccharides (pullulan, chitosan, dextran, cellulose) able to interact with inorganic and organic type particles. The correlation between chemical structure, physico-chemical properties (dynamic, capacity to absorb liquids, mechanical) and their ability to interact with different particles (clays, kreutzonit, pesticides) will be followed. Soluble cationic grafted polysaccharides with well defined structures and hydrogels with tailored porous morphology, controlled by the synthesis conditions will be obtained and characterized. Dynamic properties (viscosity and conductibility) of the polymer solutions will be studied as a function of charge density, molar mass, concentration, ionic strength (I), etc. The ionic polymers ability to interact with particles from model suspensions/emulsions will be investigated, too. The study of interdependence between the characteristics of the synthesized PEs and suspensions/emulsions ones (particle size and concentration, pH, solvent polarity, I) will help to elucidate the ionic polymers/particles interaction mechanisms. The experimental results will be quantitatively analyzed and compared with those predicted by some existing models or developed in the frame of project, which will facilitate the rigorous control of the ionic polymers properties with applicability in the wastewaters purification processing.
